Located in Beijing, the China National Speed Skating Stadium is designed to showcase the elegance, precision, speed and dynamism of speed skating with a unique look. Known as the “Ice Ribbon”, it hosted speed skating competitions during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The design creates an intense arena atmosphere, with 22 light strips (or ribbons) spiraling up around an elliptical surface, interwoven into a cocoon, with a height of about 33.8 meters. This “shell” largely ensures the comfort and convenience of the audience. When night falls, the exterior of the building presents a splendid scene, and each light strip becomes a dynamic light strip, with various lighting effects changing endlessly. The National Speed Skating Stadium covers an area of 17 hectares and has a 400-meter-long track with the highest standard ice surface in the world. The venue can accommodate about 12,000 spectators, all close to the competition venue. Two basement levels are used for venue services and parking.
Shougang Ski Jumping Platform
Shougang Ski Jumping Platform is the world’s first permanent platform for Big Air, and it is also the first competition venue in the history of the Winter Olympics that is directly combined with the reuse of industrial heritage. The design of the platform is inspired by the match between the profile curve of the platform competition and the image of the “Flying” streamer in Dunhuang. The main structure of the platform is a steel structure, with a total height of 60.5 meters and a length of about 164 meters. The main structure uses 4,100 tons of steel, of which a large number of high-strength steel and weathering steel, saving steel consumption by 9.75% and reducing carbon emissions by about 950 tons. The section curve of the platform structure meets the requirements of the Big Air competition, and at the same time reserves the possibility of section change for the aerial skill competition. In terms of shape, the three streamers simply express the concept of “flying” streamers. The top streamer marks the departure area, and the middle streamer is the main body wrapped with wind-resistant columns, competition lighting poles and safety nets to support structural columns, as well as wind-proof functions.
National Aquatics Center
As the “Water Cube” as the competition venue for swimming, diving and synchronized swimming in the 2008 Olympic Games, it was transformed into “Ice Cube” and become the competition venue for the curling event. It is also the world’s first “ice and water conversion” venue. The temperature of the ice surface is about minus 8.5 degrees Celsius, while 1.5 meters away from the ice surface, it becomes 10 degrees Celsius to ± 2 degrees Celsius, and then it becomes 18 degrees Celsius in the audience area.Humidity control should reduce the dew point temperature to minus 4 degrees Celsius.
Wukesong Sports Center
Wukesong Sports Center stadium has undergone an 8-month renovation. After the renovation, the stadium is equipped with two sizes of convertible ice rinks of 30×60 meters and 26×60 meters. It is not only a general-purpose venue for ice hockey, short track speed skating, figure skating and other events, but also can be restored to a basketball court within 6 hours.
The design of National stadium is similar to the traditional Chinese folding fan, so it is nicknamed the “fan”. This stadium was constructed for 2008 Summer Olympic Games, now the appearance has maintained its original appearance as much as possible. The selection of façade materials and the division of space scales are consistent with the original buildings. In addition, the exterior façade of the expanded training hall is designed with a glass curtain wall, which can fully introduce natural lighting. Through the external shading and internal shading systems, natural lighting can be adjusted to minimize lighting energy consumption.

At 8 pm on February 20, 2022, the closing ceremony of the XXIV Winter Olympic Games was held at the National Stadium.
The closing ceremony is mainly based on the ceremonial link stipulated by the International Olympic Committee, and the performance is integrated into the ceremony through ingenious design; the element of Beijing’s “Double Olympic City” will be specially designed and presented at the closing. When the fire of the Winter Olympics was finally extinguished, a momentary physical reproduction of the 2008 Olympic Games seemed to rewind time;
After the Olympic flag handover ceremony, the theme of the “Eight Minutes” performance by the hosts of the next Winter Olympics, Milan and Cortina D’Ampezzo in Italy, was “Twin Cities, Gathering Together”. Duality, Together”). The theme is consistent with the Beijing Winter Olympics theme slogan and the newly added Olympic motto.
On the basis of continuing the “simple” style of the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics once again presented Chinese-style romance and “double Olympics” feelings through the organic integration of ceremony and performance.
